How to use the pip calculator
- Pick the currency pair, or gold.
- Enter your position size in lots. 1 is a standard lot, 0.1 a mini lot, 0.01 a micro lot.
- Choose your account currency. If it is not the last currency of the pair, the calculator fills in today's price, and you can type your platform's price instead.
- Optional: enter how many pips you expect the price to move to see the result in money.
What is a pip?
A pip is the standard step a forex price moves in. For most pairs it is the fourth decimal, 0.0001. For pairs with the Japanese yen it is the second decimal, 0.01. When EUR/USD goes from 1.1180 to 1.1185, it has moved 5 pips.
Most platforms show one more decimal. That last, smaller step is a pipette, a tenth of a pip. A move from 1.11800 to 1.11807 is 7 pipettes, or 0.7 pips.
The pip value formula
pip value = pip size × units traded
then convert it into your account currency if needed
The result of the first line is in the second currency of the pair. Three cases cover every pair:
- The pair ends in your account currency, like EUR/USD with a USD account: 0.0001 × 100,000 = 10 dollars per standard lot. Always.
- The pair starts with your account currency, like USD/CHF with a USD account: 0.0001 × 100,000 = 10 francs, and 10 ÷ 0.8328 = 12.01 dollars.
- Your currency is not in the pair, like EUR/GBP with a USD account: 10 pounds × GBP/USD 1.3235 = 13.24 dollars.
Pip values for popular pairs
For a USD account, with prices from 12 October 2026. Pairs that end in USD never change. The others move a little with the price.
| Pair | 1 lot | 0.1 lot | 0.01 lot |
|---|---|---|---|
| EUR/USD | $10.00 | $1.00 | $0.100 |
| GBP/USD | $10.00 | $1.00 | $0.100 |
| AUD/USD | $10.00 | $1.00 | $0.100 |
| USD/JPY | $6.31 | $0.63 | $0.063 |
| USD/CHF | $12.01 | $1.20 | $0.120 |
| USD/CAD | $7.01 | $0.70 | $0.070 |
| EUR/GBP | $13.24 | $1.32 | $0.132 |
| EUR/JPY | $6.31 | $0.63 | $0.063 |
| GBP/JPY | $6.31 | $0.63 | $0.063 |
| AUD/CAD | $7.01 | $0.70 | $0.070 |
| XAU/USD (gold, 0.10 pip) | $10.00 | $1.00 | $0.100 |
How much is 1 pip worth in US dollars?
It depends on the pair and the size. On EUR/USD, GBP/USD, AUD/USD and NZD/USD one pip is worth exactly 10 dollars on a standard lot, 1 dollar on a mini lot and 10 cents on a micro lot. On other pairs it is a bit more or less, as the table shows.
What a pip is worth at different lot sizes
On EUR/USD with a USD account:
| Lots | 1 pip | 50 pips | 100 pips |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.01 | $0.10 | $5.00 | $10.00 |
| 0.10 | $1.00 | $50.00 | $100.00 |
| 0.50 | $5.00 | $250.00 | $500.00 |
| 1.00 | $10.00 | $500.00 | $1,000.00 |
| 2.00 | $20.00 | $1,000.00 | $2,000.00 |
So 50 pips on a 0.01 lot is 5 dollars, and 50 pips on a full lot is 500 dollars. The move on the chart is the same. Only the size changes what it does to your account.
Pips on gold
Gold is quoted in dollars per ounce, usually with two decimals. Most platforms count a gold pip as a 0.10 dollar move, so a move from 4,000.00 to 4,001.00 is 10 pips. One lot is usually 100 ounces, which makes one pip worth 10 dollars per lot. Some platforms call 0.01 a pip, so always check yours. The gold lot size calculator lets you enter the stop in dollars and avoid the confusion.
Common mistakes
- Assuming every pair pays 10 dollars a pip. Only pairs that end in your account currency do.
- Mixing up pips and pipettes. A 50-point move on a five-decimal platform is only 5 pips.
- Forgetting that yen pairs use 0.01. A move from 158.40 to 158.60 is 20 pips, not 2,000.
- Using the pip value to decide the size. The size should come from your risk and your stop. The lot size calculator does that for you.
Frequently asked questions
What is a pip?
A pip is the standard step a currency price moves in: 0.0001 for most pairs and 0.01 for pairs with the Japanese yen. A move from 1.1180 to 1.1185 is 5 pips.
How do I calculate my pip value?
Multiply the pip size by the number of units you trade. For EUR/USD and one standard lot: 0.0001 × 100,000 = 10 dollars. If the pair does not end in your account currency, convert the result at the current price.
How much is 50 pips in 0.01 lot size?
On EUR/USD and other pairs that end in USD, a 0.01 lot pays 10 cents a pip, so 50 pips is 5 dollars. On USD/JPY it is a little less, about 3 dollars at current prices.
How much is 1 pip worth in US dollars?
On pairs that end in USD, 10 dollars per standard lot, 1 dollar per mini lot and 10 cents per micro lot. On other pairs it depends on the price.
What is a pipette?
A pipette is a tenth of a pip, the last decimal most platforms show. On EUR/USD it is 0.00001.
Why does the pip value change on USD/JPY?
Because the pip is worth 1,000 yen per standard lot, and what 1,000 yen is worth in dollars depends on the USD/JPY price. When the price rises, the dollar value of a pip falls.
